WHAT: In America: An Anthology of Fashion

I'm excited to present the heeltote.com experience at The Costume Institute's In America which is a two-part exhibition on view until September 5, 2022.  Part One, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which opened September 18, 2021, is in the Anna Wintour Costume Center and it celebrates the Costume Institute's 75th anniversary.  See a glimpse of Part One on Instagram.  Part Two, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, which opened May 5 2022, in the American Wing period rooms presents narratives that relate to the histories of those rooms.  These narratives are expansive and inclusive of gender, race, and class.

“I enjoyed both parts of the exhibition, which included having fun and being amazed at John Vanderlyn's panoramic 1819 mural of Versailles which was the backdrop to recreate the historic 1973 "Battle of Versailles" that pitted American designers against their French counterparts.  In addition, the music for this immersive exhibition was good."

Part Two, which you will get a peek into here on heeltote.com, shows a series of collaborations with American film directors who visualize the unfinished stories found in The Met's period rooms.  These stories are told in 3-D cinematic freeze-frames.  The interiors of the period rooms, known as immersive interiors, present a survey of more than 300 years of America domestic life.  The garments worn by men and women date from the 18th century to the present and are showcased in vignettes installed in the period rooms.  The scenes explore the role of dress in shaping American identity and address the deep histories of the rooms.

The Met Gala for Part Two took place on Monday, May 2, 2022 and The Met Gala Theme was "Guilded Glamour."  Part Two of the exhibition is a collaboration between the Costume Institute and the American Wing.
