Privyet.  Happy New Year!  It’s the time of year that many of us reassess our fitness goals and wardrobe.  In light of this and the inspiring Sochi Games we, at heeltote.com, offer our general styling advice on what to wear when indoor ice skating.

Our advice is with ice skating and figure skating and not hockey in mind, although hockey ice skating uniforms offer the most protection for the wearer.  Figure skating outfits are most interesting to me as a model because of the similarities of considering dress style for range of movement.

When choosing an outfit for ice skating you are looking for comfort, fit and style.  Start with garments in your own closet.

Layer up.  You can adjust your layers for comfort and some protection on the ice.

Look for Lycra.  You’ll need pieces with elasticity so you can move. 

Loosen up.  Loosen up your style.  Switch your traditional skater skirt with peplum – but only sometimes because we also really like the skater skirt.

Try mesh.  You’ll need pieces with ventilation.  The more active you are on the ice the more you are likely to warm up.

Wear clothes that fit.  You’ll be moving around and not want to adjust your clothing often.  It can get nippy on the ice.

Jazz it up.  Figure skating uniforms are fun and shopping for one can be much like prom dress shopping with all the embellishments.  If you are ice skating and don’t want to startle the other skaters with too much glitz then go for a bold pattern such as polka dots, or wear this year’s Pantone color of Radiant Orchid.  

Coordinate it.  If your boots don’t match, then get over it.  Seriously, get over the boot skating tights and the problem is solved.  You can even coordinate your skate guards.

You don’t want to skate on thin ice.  The best time to skate is when the ice is refreshed so there is less chance to ruin your outfit – the one that we are carefully advising you about.
